Tests recently released by the Gorceix Foundation – institution linked to the School of Mines of the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP) indicate that the tailings from Fundão dam do not represent hazard to people’s health. The material, collected on November 30, has been identified as class II B (non-hazardous waste, inert), i.e. it does not offer danger when handled, neither presents risk of contamination when exposed to rain for many years.
The sample was collected from Santarém dam, which received tailings from Fundão after the accident. The material has been submitted to tests, which simulate several different situations to assess the potential risks that the tailings may offer to human health and to the environment.
