With paralyzed operations, layoff period is extended

06/07/2017

Last April, Samarco entered into a collective agreement with the Metabase (MG) and Sindimetal (ES) unions for the temporary suspension of labor contracts (layoff). The decision was approved by the employees in assembly and understood as the best option for the maintenance of jobs.

Initially, the contracts for about 800 employees would be suspended for two months from June 1st, susceptible to extension. As provided in the agreement, and due to the uncertainty regarding the date of resumption of operations, the layoff period will be extended for another three months (until October 31st).

Employees with suspended contracts receive a grant from the Worker Support Fund (Fundo de Amparo ao Trabalhador – FAT) and professional qualification courses. Samarco complements the value of the grant by maintaining the net income and all the current employees’ benefits, such as food allowance and health insurance.

As part of the company’s effort to maintain its staff, after one year and eight months without operational activities, Samarco has already adopted the following measures provided by law:

  • Paid leave (11/10/2015 to 11/29/15)
  • Collective vacations (11/30/15 to 12/29/15)
  • 2nd period of paid leave (1/4/16 to 01/10/16)
  • Layoff period (1/25/16 to 6/25/16)
  • Layoff (6/1/17 to 10/31/17)
