Prevention measures are being taken to minimize the impacts of the arrival of the turbidity plume in Regência, district of Linhares, in Espírito Santo.
Samarco is installing nine thousand meters of barriers along both banks of the Doce River and at some islands located in the estuary, with the objective of protecting the fauna and flora which inhabit these regions. The Company is also performing an aerial monitoring of the region using equipment called OceanEye. This is a helium-filled balloon carrying a triple-sensor unit capable of producing high resolution day and night imagery and geo-location coordinates.
Water tank trucks have been sent to Regência and nearby Povoação, as a preventive action, since these districts are not supplied from the Doce River. As a precaution, Civil Defense recommends people to refraining from bathing in the river and the sea in these regions, for the water will be dark with the arrival of the plume.
The Projeto Tamar has collected the turtle eggs that were on the Comboios beach and taken them to a higher part on the seacoast. A team is monitoring the place to collect water samples to be analyzed daily.
