Dogs, cats, pigs, cows, horses, among others, in a total of 604 animals, have been rescued from the areas affected by the accident with the Samarco dam, in Mariana, on November 5th.
The animals have been receiving veterinary care, proper feed and are being assisted on a daily basis by Samarco employees, NGOs and outsourced companies. Many animals have already been identified by their owners and taken to the homes where these people are staying. Other will be temporarily housed in shelters provided by the Company, under the care of a specialized team.
On an emergency basis, the Company has supplied a building in the urban area of Mariana to serve as a shelter, a shed in Antonio Pereira to store the consumables, feed, sawdust and crushed rock, as well as a farm to keep the larger animals. Samarco is also providing all the logistics necessary to help transport the animals to specialized clinics, when needed, as well as vehicles with drivers to help rescue animals, and equipment for personal protection, such as rubber boots, vests and safety helmets, not to mention office supplies and personnel for security and cleanup.
Another action being implemented is the distribution of consumables (corn, cornmeal, assorted animal feed, and salt, among others) for the animals on farms in Bento Rodrigues, Barra Longa, Bicas, Camargos, Gesteira, Guerra, Paracatu de Baixo, Pedras, Ponte do Gama, Santo Antônio de Pedras, Barretos and Campinas, according to the roster of producers prepared by the city administration of Mariana, through the Agriculture Secretariat.
