Turbidity Plume Change of Direction at Sea

03/12/2015

Due to change in meteorological and oceanographic conditions, the turbidity plume that was making its way towards the south-southeast direction, changed its behavior. The adrift plume is now moving towards the north-northeast direction.

The analysis results from the visual survey held yesterday, December 1st, in a conjunct overflight conducted with representatives of environmental agencies. In conformity with monitoring criteria agreed with these agencies, the total area of the plume reached about 91 square kilometers, of which 31.5 square kilometers are of high concentration and the remaining are of medium  concentration of solids.

The high concentration mud stain reaches 13 km of extension to the north, 1 km to the south, 6 km east (into the sea) and 5 km  southwest. The average concentration reached 17 km north, 6 km south, 14 km east and 15 km southwest.

It was also agreed with the respective environmental agencies that these estimates will be validated through overflights made by a company specialized in aerial survey and geo-referencing, hired by Samarco, in order to ratify the plume behavior information.
