Until June 16th families from Paracatu, subdistrict of Mariana, impacted by the Fundão dam collapse, are getting to know the three possible sites for the reconstruction of the community. Just as proceeded for Bento Rodrigues residents, the visitors are receiving information on soil quality, geology, vegetation, cavities and other studied technical characteristics. The residents will also be able to clarify doubts before the voting to take place in the beginning of July.
The sites – named Joel, Toninho, and Lucila – are located within a 5 km radius from the former Paracatu and 36 km from Mariana city center, and their selection was based in seven criteria: water supply, energy availability, closeness to Paracatu de Baixo, easy accessibility, keeping Paracatu’s neighbors, access to public transportations and adequate terrain and topography.
To be able to select the three sites Samarco has studied 24 properties. The whole process had the involvement of the community, which since January has participated in 18 thematic meeting about the resettlement, among work groups and assembly with all the families. Apart from the visits, the company organizes the studies in different formats such as booklets and 3D video of virtual reality.
As soon as the families choose the site for the reconstruction of the community of Paracatu, the debate over the architectural and urban project for the new district shall start. At such stage, the community will define the location for the public assets, like the square, religious temples, the school, the health center and the soccer field, and the building standards of the residencies. The next step will be the one-to-one dialogue with the families to set up the details of each house, like the place, structure and finishing standards.
As the particular agreements are reached, it is expected that the engineering projects are concluded by the end of the year. Samarco will hand over the site until 2019, as envisaged in the Agreement signed with the Federal government and the state governments of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo.
Community of Gesteira

The two sites, named Macacos Farm and Mr. Clécio, are both located near by the central neighborhood. It is expected that the voting take place by the end of July with the participation of all families from the Gesteira community.
