Monitoring station proves good air quality in Barra Longa

10/05/2016

Barra Longa (MG) has a monitoring station to measure the concentration of particulate matter (dust) in the air as part of the recovery works of areas affected by the Fundão Dam burst. So far, all results show that the parameters are within the established by the National Environmental Council.

The municipality’s central region has automatic equipment running 24 hours a day, installed since February 18th. With their usage it is possible to perceive the presence of particles in the air, as well as meteorological aspects, such as the speed and direction of winds. Each hour an updated report with the average amount of material found during the period is issued.

In addition to monitoring, Samarco is strengthening the activities of humectation of access ways, by use of tank trucks, in the places where there are current works and cleaning processes. Another activity that is also contributing to the reduction of particulate matter is the revegetation Carmo and Gualaxo river banks, an initiative that seeks to prevent the wind from acting on the deposited material. The planting of grasses and legumes, in just over 795 hectares, has also been carried out.

Monitoring works will continue over the coming months.
