Renova Foundation is responsible for Integrated Environmental Recovery Program (PRAI)

13/12/2016

The Renova Foundation is responsible for the management of the Integrated Environmental Recovery Plan (PRAI), initiated by Samarco, since the failure of the Fundão dam. The document demonstrates that the activities performed on an emergency basis, those ongoing and those still being planned are interconnected and converge towards the rehabilitation of the environment.

PRAI consists of five major work fronts: safety of the remaining structures of the company, expansion of tailings storage capacity, containment and control of erosion at impacted areas along rivers, scientific basis of risk analysis and recovery process, and rehabilitation of rivers.

On an emergency basis, initiatives were performed related to the safety of Samarco’s remaining structures – located in the Germano Complex in Mariana – impacted by the failure of the Fundão dam. Also at first, actions were developed in two other fronts. One is the expansion front of the tailings storage capacity, which includes the works of Axis 1, Nova Santarém, Dike S3 and Dike S4. The other front is the containment and control of the erosion of the impacted areas along the rivers, which were the initial actions to rehabilitate the margins of the tributaries and revegetation. These actions were started by Samarco and are now conducted by the Renova Foundation.

Parallel to the initial work, two objectives of the PRAI came into action, which have already begun under the responsibility of the Renova Foundation. The first is the scientific basis of risk analysis and rehabilitation process, made up of a series of scientific and social assessments aimed at guiding the decision-making as to remediation in the medium and long term. The second one concerns actions that will contribute to the rehabilitation of rivers, always with the guidance and approval of the competent environmental agencies. These two work fronts are underway and involve short, medium and long-term actions.

The PRAI is aligned with the Framework Agreement (TTAC), signed in March 2016 between Samarco, Vale and BHP Billiton with the federal government and the Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo state governments. All PRAI material is available at the Renova Foundation website. Click here and see.
