Recovery actions show results

12/04/2016

The recovery actions implemented by Samarco since last November, when there was the burst of Fundão dam in Mariana, have been split into several work fronts. See what has been accomplished in the main fronts:

Reconstruction

Among the main reconstruction actions, there is the definition, to happen this month, of the area for constructing the new district of Bento Rodrigues. Up to the end of this month, the residents will define the location of the spaces for common use such as squares and religious temples. Then, the urbanization work shall begin.

In the municipality of Barra Longa, all the accesses have been unobstructed and are under maintenance. The internal areas of the houses released by the Civil Defense are now clean, as the roads in downtown. From 89 houses released for renovation, 51 have been accomplished. Amid the stores, 23 have been renovated and 8 are under renovation.  The town’s main square has been completely cleaned and, in a participative process with the community, there is an architectural project being drafted for the square.

Samarco has also provided 1,800 tons of corn silage in sacks, other than corn flour, hay, wheat bran, soybean meal and dog, horse and milky cow feed, among others. Altogether, around 3,000 animals have been assisted in farms in the region and 107 thousand meters of fence have been installed in the rural properties.

People

Up to now, 225 people from the communities have been hired for jobs mapped by the front Occupation, Jobs and Income. Based on professional, education and interest data, Samarco has been searching opportunities to reinsert people into the job market. All the work fronts prioritize the hiring of local people.

The chili jam factory, a traditional activity in Bento Rodrigues, has been reestablished and is now in full operation.

In another work front, by means of a partnership with Sesi, Senai and Fiemg, 220 youngsters have graduated in professional training courses of civil construction and gastronomy. There are new classes scheduled to start in the next two months for sowing, computing, manicure and handcraft courses.

As an emergency financial support, Samarco has delivered 4,726 subsidiary cards composed of a minimum salary, plus 20% for each dependent, plus the amount corresponding to a market basket, according to what has been calculated by Dieese.

From this total, 540 have been delivered to the communities of Mariana, Barra Longa and Rio Doce and the other 3,992 to fishermen and riverside communities whose subsistence depend on the river. The registration of impacted people is still been performed by Samarco.

Environment

In the environment front, Samarco has completed the construction of three dikes for containment of sediments. The revegetation of over 700 hectares of affected areas was carried out, the equivalent to 980 soccer fields. The action was conducted along the Doce, Carmo and Gualaxo rivers.

In the Risoleta Neves Hydropower plant (Candonga), the processes for dredging 500 thousand cubic meters of sediments from the reservoir have started. This will enable the resumption of power production.

Another important work front in the environmental area concerns the permanent monitoring of water quality. 118 points are monitored throughout the entire length of the river Doce, a job that has generated more than 500,000 analysis and 25,000 technical reports.

In Colatina it has been authorized the construction of two new pipelines in the rivers Pancas and Santa Maria. The regular water supply has been reestablished in all the towns that capture water from the Rio Doce. Technical reports from different agencies show that, after treatment, the water in these towns meet the requirements of the ordinance 2,914 from 2011 of the Ministry of Health.
