In parallel to the socioeconomic repair initiatives, Samarco has developed a series of environmental actions. Aiming to encourage improvements in terms of the levels of color and turbidity of the waterway affected, almost 3 million m² – equivalent to 406 soccer fields – of the riverbanks of the Gualaxo and Doce Rivers have been revegetated, between Mariana and Hydroelectric Power Plant Risoleta Neves, located between the cities of Rio Doce and Santa Cruz do Escalvado.
This stage of the work promotes the improvement of soil conditions and possible future actions for soil recovery, minimization of dust dispersion, and assists in the retention of sediments into waterways.
Check out the before and after:
In the planting, a mix of grass and vegetable seeds were sown, species that quickly cover the area and contribute to the prevention of erosion. These plants also help to improve the chemical, physical and microbiological conditions of the mud, preparing the area for the final recovery actions.
In February, the second stage of this revegetation began with over 600 hectares, which will receive the same mix of seeds, and is expected to be completed in about 90 days.
