Samarco is concluding a major effort of providing support to 16 water treatment plants in the municipalities along the Doce River. Fifty specialized Samarco employees were sent to 11 cities in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, to help train local technicians and operators in the treatment of the water so it could be supplied to the population. Shortly all of the plants will be operating independently, as they did before the accident.
This support was justified in view of the increased turbidity of the Doce River water, which rendered the treatment more complex. Samarco contributed for over a month in the activities of operation, dosage, calculation and use of specific reagents, helping to normalize the distribution of water to all the cities which had had their supply interrupted.
Currently, training is being provided to the operators of the main treatment plant of Governador Valadares. Samarco developed an operations manual outlining the specific procedures for water presenting high turbidity. In addition, the Company put in operation the equipment available for dosing reagents on an automatic basis, making the process more efficient and reducing the variations in the quality of the treated water. This allows any variation in turbidity to be corrected instantaneously. Local employees from three treatment plants in Espírito Santo have also received training.
