On December 22 Samarco carried out the second overflight for mapping animals that are still in places hard to reach, near the area affected by the accident at the dam. The mapping was performed by a technician from Ibama, a veterinarian, a cameraman and an engineer who also filmed and made the georeferencing of the area. The action is part of a work that has rescued, medicated and provided care to about 600 animals and has supplied food to other 4,000.
The overflight is provided in the Preliminary Commitment Agreement (TCP) that Samarco firmed together with the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Minas Gerais (MP-MG) signed on December 18, related to animal care. The document endorsed the effort that has been made in partnership with various associations and volunteers. The material collected during the flight will produce a video that will indicate possible new rescues and attention to individual animals.
As provided in the TCP, the company will formalize within 45 days, a plan for animal localization, rescue and care. Specialized professionals are already working in the field ensuring compliance with the behavioural and psychological needs of animals by stimulating the natural behaviours of each species.
The work to safeguard animals began as an emergency response to the accident and currently lies on the stabilization phase, with monitoring of the animals. A structure built in Mariana currently houses 484 animals and a veterinary hospital with an operation room. In addition, the company also makes the distribution of inputs (corn, feed, cornmeal, bran and salt, among others) in support to producers in rural Mariana and Barra Longa.
For sheltered animals, Samarco develops planning for long-term actions, which provides the search for definitive places for them, such as repossession or referral for adoption.
