To assist in the monitoring and safety works of the dikes and Germano and Santarém dams, Samarco uses high-tech tools. The monitoring of structures is done in real time using radars, laser scanning, cameras, water level meters (piezometers), and accelerometers, among others. To reinforce this action, a visual monitoring room was set up at the Germano Unit, working 24 hours a day.
Samarco also performed technical studies, immediately after the Fundão Dam burst, for each of the remaining structures. Thus, in recent months, these structures were reinforced with the construction of three containment dikes. The work, which has already been completed, prevents tailings from reaching the Carmo, Gualaxo and Doce rivers.
To further strengthen security, sirens were installed in all communities located near the dams. The company also has two technicians per shift, carrying out inspections and field visits.
