Samarco placed 31st in terms of transparency among the 100 largest Brazilian companies and 10 largest domestic banks in a recent study by Transparency International Brazil. Samarco, which has had its operations paralyzed since November 2017, also ranked 17th among 53 companies which have operations in foreign countries. The study, which was conducted in 2017 and published this year, sought to identify how Brazil’s largest corporations are improving their standards of transparency and preventing corruption by analysing information published by these companies on their websites.
The study was based on information available on the companies’ websites. After this stage, the corporations responded to a survey with items related to three central aspects evaluated in the study: anti-corruption programs, organizational structure and financial data concerning actions abroad. The companies were separated into two groups: general index (that considered the first two aspects) and the Brazilian multinational index ( that considered all three). Only 53 large companies act abroad and fall into the last index.
Samarco’s Position
Samarco placed 31st among the 110 corporations (100 companies and 10 banks) that participated in the study. On a scale of 0-10, the company received a score of 8.5 for its anti-corruption program. For organizational transparency, the company received a score of 6.3. In the category of country reports, where financial data in the countries of action are analyzed, Samarco received a 1.3. The company obtained an average of 7.4 in the general index and 5.4 in the multinational index, where it ranked 17th among the 53 multinationals.
The selection of the companies was done using the Valor 1000 Ranking published in the Valor Econômico Journal.
