An initiative of Samarco’s Environmental Education Program (PEA), in partnership with coffee farmers in the Caparaó region, which includes Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, it has been showing good results this year. Through joint work with the rural assistance company Caparaó Jr, several actions are being carried out to restore and preserve springs in the region.

The preservation work consists of cleaning and fencing areas around springs to prevent animals from causing damage, control erosion and plant native species. In all, interventions have already been promoted in 12 water courses, which directly supply 42 families and 190 people.

The program also involves technical assistance for coffee planters and encourages rural producers to focus on the environmental, social and economic sustainability of their properties.

The partnership between Samarco and Caparaó Jr has been in effect for 10 years and, together with the Federal Institute of Espírito Santo (Ifes), promotes development, skills training, productivity and income improvement for the region. It is estimated that 1,200 coffee farmers and 33 communities in 11 municipalities in the two states have already benefited from these actions.

We believe that good partnerships like this contribute to our pursuit of doing mining differently mining.
